Somalian ClassSomalia is one of those hotspots in the world where ancient struggles have fractured families, torn futures apart and dislodged countless people, some of whom have come to Green Bay to start a new life. But, like so many displaced populations, often they remain separated, invisible and ignored by a majority of the community.
But, many in Green Bay are eager to help and are curious about these interesting people we see in our schools, libraries and grocery stores. But, these same people are often unsure, even fearful, of how to get started, especially when confronted with the cultural and religious barriers that seem so large. Over the course of three weeks, Islam and Christianity in Green Bay will touch on cultural, religious and language issues and give participants a place to join in meaningful discussion that will encourage understanding and further interaction with Islam and our new Somali neighbors. Though this is a “101” introductory series, we are looking for serious students who are willing to learn, challenge their preconceived ideas and become deliberately engaged with the growing Somali population in Green Bay and the Fox Valley.
